Knowing God: What is He like?

Intro: Do You Know Him?

What is He like?  What is His nature?  Finding personal security and worth in God alone is the only thing that can truly free a person to be who they were meant to be.

Too many Christians don’t know God.  They think they do, but they only know Him through other people, what other Christians have told them….and sometimes that is wrong.

Some of them have hardly read their Bible, so they don’t know what He is like.  Or they have just read some of it…chosen the bits about God they like, and then left the rest.  By doing this, we can create a God of our own image, how WE think He should be (because we want to believe that).

Many don’t, or can’t, trust God, purely because they don’t know Him.  How can you trust someone you don’t know?  Like, really know?  Is He dependable, is He reliable, is He trustworthy?  Is He consistent in nature or does He get angry and fly off the handle?  Can I truly believe Him?  You fear, you stress, you worry, you get upset, because you don’t know Him.  You can’t give your lives fully over into His hands, because you don’t know Him.

What is He like? What is His nature?  How does He look at me, see me, relate to me?  I don’t truly know who I am, if I don’t know who He is.  God + man = a whole person.  I become secure in me, when I know who He is.  I become secure in life, secure in the future.

You can’t let go, and because you don’t fully trust Him, you want to be in control of your life.

You can’t give yourself to Him to experience Him more fully, because you don’t know Him.

Also, you become like the God you worship.  If He is an uncertain God that you worship, you will have insecurity and uncertainty in every area of your life.

You find it hard to have faith, because you don’t know the certainty of who He is.

You find it hard to pray beyond surface prayers, because you don’t have certainty in the nature of God and what He truly desires for you.

“Those who KNOW their God shall be strong and do exploits” (Daniel 11:32). Conversely, you won’t truly know Him until you take some risks and depend on Him for dear life….or until He is all you have to lean on.

The Apostle Paul said – “I want to KNOW Christ and experience the mighty power that raised Him from the dead.” (Phil. 3:10)

“…that we may KNOW Him that is true….” (1 John 5:20)

The growing realisation of who God is and who you are in God is truly liberating in every area of your life.

‘Knowing God’ and ‘Knowing Who You Are in Him’ – are absolutely critical.  The two most important things in life. Your sure foundation. I have found throughout the years, time and time again through the crucible of trials, when things are extra tough or uncertain, the people or things I thought were dependable turned out not to be, there’s been painful betrayal, my heart has been broken, or the rug has been pulled out from under my feet….these are the two CERTAIN things that you can hold onto and are your sure foundation.  They will hold you steady in the face of all hell breaking loose around you, and are so critically important.  Knowing God…and being sure of your identity in Him.

The Names of God in the Word tell us a lot of what He is like, his nature. This is so crucial for you to find your security in Him and what He is like.  To really know His nature…not just what you have heard or think you know.  Know without a doubt. Study the Word for yourself, look up the scriptures, and they will change your life.  You will find yourself feeling so much more secure, and your prayer life will change.

I truly believe this is one of the greatest pursuits you can ever put your heart to….continue reading for more on the power of KNOWING GOD.
