The Power of God’s Names …
They tell us Who He is … what He is like … about His nature …
They help us KNOW Him; truly and truthfully ...
“That I may know Him…” Philippians 3:10
The Names of God in the Word tell us a lot about what He is like; His nature. This is so crucial for you to find your security in Him and what He is like. To really know His nature….not only His attributes (like His Holiness, Infinity, All-Powerfulness, etc), and not just what you have heard or think you know about Him.
- When you love someone you really want to get to know them.
- To know their heart, what makes them tick.
- Make it a life pursuit, to know Him better!
- Make Him your Magnificent Obsession!
- What is He REALLY like?
- Know without a doubt!
- Study the Word for yourself.
- Look up the scriptures, and they will change your life.
- You will find greater depths in Him.
- You will find yourself feeling so much more secure, and your prayer life will change.
- I truly believe this is one of the greatest pursuits you can ever put your heart and mind to.
“[For my determined purpose is] that I may know Him [that I may progressively become more deeply and intimately acquainted with Him…understanding the wonders of His person more strongly and more clearly]…”
(Philippians 3:10 AMP)
You see, when we get to know God—really know Him—it fills us with hope and confidence because we realize He’s greater than any situation we will ever encounter. Understanding God’s character and incredible love for us allows us to relax and trust Him in every area of our lives.
Prayerfully studying and meditating on the character traits and names of God and their meaning, is one of the most faith-building, encouraging things you can do for your spiritual life. As you come to learn and understand them, they will dispel your anxiety and boost your faith.
When you know the true character of God, it will enable you to trust Him more. By renewing your mind through meditating and studying the names of God and especially on their meaning, the truth will dissolve all doubt and breathe life into your soul!
The Power of God’s Names
I’ve found that we can learn so much about the Lord by examining His many names found in the Bible. Each one reveals a unique aspect of His character along with a very specific promise for our lives.
The Bible says He is Jehovah Jireh, which means “Your Provider.” He’s Jehovah Rapha, “Your Healer,” and Jehovah Shalom, “Your Peace.” The Lord is also referred to as Jehovah Nissi, “The Lord Our Banner.” This means He is our “victory”: we can expect God to help us win our battles over sin, addictive habits, pain from the past, and anything else that stands in the way of His great plan for our lives.
I encourage you to get to know God more and more. Read and study His Word. Talk to the Lord like He’s your best friend and ask Him to reveal His love and character to you in a greater way.
Because when you get to know Him – really know Him – it releases new hope and confidence in the One who can change every single area of your life.
Joyce Meyer

Many men and women throughout the Bible made it their mission to know God. Paul actually called it “his determined purpose” (see Philippians 3:10). King David said what he wanted most in life was to seek God and behold the wonders of His beauty (see Psalm 27).
The word seek means “to crave, pursue and go after.”
By seeking God for themselves, Paul and David came to know the essence of His character. They fell deeply in love with God and wanted to be like Him.
We can also fall deeply in love with Him if we choose to seek Him in our lives.
As you dig for the hidden treasures and gemstones of God’s names within the pages of His Word, I believe your relationship with God will change forever.
And those who know Your Name will put their trust in You, for You, Lord, have not abandoned those who seek You.
(Psalm 9:10)
Here is the key:
A name is simply a word that tells you who a person is.
SO, if you study as many of the names of God as you can, you will see who He is. And, the more of His names you study, the better you will know Him.
And the more you dig into His Word and mine out the gemstones of His names that tell you WHO HE IS, the more of those names you will see!
We need to know who God is—our big God, our real God—not the pansy, weak concept of God that most believers (and certainly the unsaved) have adopted.
If we have a low view of God, we have actually created something in our imagination that is not God at all. Therefore, by worshipping this low view of God that is not God at all, the “not-God-thing” that we have created in our imagination is actually an idol.

Because of God’s depth of character, He has a name to reflect His different attributes and capacities for relating to humanity. If we were to write a week’s lessons on every name of God that appears in the Bible, it still couldn’t hold them. We would need volumes of studies.
God has a name for any and every situation you find yourself in. I encourage you to get to know the names of God, because in knowing His character and in understanding His ability to act in your situation, you’ll learn to rest and discover peace and power in His covenant care. By learning God’s names, you can come to truly know Him.
Worship is loving and praising the God we personally know!
We can only worship someone we love, and we can only love someone we know!
Worship fundamentally begins in the heart when we come to know God. If we really know Him as He wants to be known, we will love Him. And if we really love Him, worship will be the explosion that takes place in our souls as we comprehend and appreciate our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend as we gratefully sing of His power and His love. Trying to manufacture that from the outside in doesn’t work.
Oh, how I can vouch for these truths above, in my own life. In one particular excruciatingly painful and devastating period of my life, wracked with hurt from a situation that came from nowhere, and through no fault of my own, I had no idea how I would ever recover, how the gaping wound would ever be able to heal, how I would ever stop the agonizing pain in the depth of my heart. As I flailed around in my spirit, leaning into God while trying to make sense of it all and trying desperately to find His perspective in it all, I landed on something that has been so significant and special that changed my life and relationship with God forever. The Holy Spirit revealed a facet of God’s heart, his nature, that I had hardly ever considered too much before, but in this moment He came in like a flood and I plumbed the depth of God’s kindness, a kindness like I had never known. Over a number of days and weeks He ministered His kindness to me as I discovered the One who is the most unbelievably kindest Person you will ever ever meet. His kindness took my breath away as He ministered in the depths of my soul (and still often does) in a way only He can do. He is Kindness personified. Kindness is not just a fruit of the Spirit. It is not just a description of love in the love chapter (1 Corinthians 13). Kindness is a Person and His Name is Jesus. Pure Kindness, with no hidden agenda. And I never knew that part of Him before. Until you’ve experienced it, it’s really quite unexplainable. When I didn’t even know I needed that, He was all of that and more. The contrast from the calculated cruel treatment I had received was like dark and light. Immeasurable. “[Love] is kind”… put His Name in there. I am forever grateful for the way His kindness healed my heart. And it was a complete work. He has changed me from the inside out.
When you list God’s attributes, where does kindness rank? To be honest, I’m not sure that being kind would have been on my list of God’s attributes at all, until I experienced it firsthand. It’s not that I didn’t think God was kind, but rather that I hadn’t realised the importance or depth of it.
- God is kind. That is the essence of Who He is. He doesn’t just do kind things. He is kind. It is so much a part of Him that He is even kind to the ungrateful and wicked (Luke 6:35).
- “For His merciful kindness is great toward us.” (Psalm 117:2)
- “I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness You have shown your servant.” (Genesis 32:10)
- “But the Lord was with Joseph and extended kindness to him.” (Genesis 39:21)
- “….the incomparable riches of His grace, expressed in His kindness to us in Christ Jesus.” (Eph. 2:6-7)
- “He is slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness.”
- “But when the kindness and love of God our Saviour appeared, He saved us…..” (Titus 3:4-5)
- “Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant and patient God is with you?” (Romans 2:4a)
- “The kindness of God leads us to repentance.” (Romans 2:4b)
- “Love is Kind…” (1 Corinthians 13)

This is just one example. There are so many instances of how He has revealed His heart to me in specific situations, and as I have discovered another facet of His nature that has come alive to me (often through focusing on one of His Names or descriptions from the Word), I have found places in Him I never knew existed. How can I begin to tell you about my personal Counsellor, my personal Encourager, my Sustainer, my Strength, my Burden Bearer, my Everlasting Arms, my Teacher and Guide, my amazing Shepherd, good good Father, Miracle Worker, the Sifter, Shaker, All-Consuming Fire, Jehovah Jireh and so much more. I truly love praying one of the Names of God, exploring that part of who He is in prayer, and genuinely feel His leading, His pleasure and His Presence as I seek to know Him more. I sincerely pray that for you as well.
